From the late 15th century until the French Revolution, the Great Council of Mechelin was the supreme court of the Habsburg and later the Spanish Netherlands. Only when the catholic Netherlands fell to French troops in 1794 was the council dissolved. Its original seat was the Schepenhuis (aldermen’s house) in the town of Mechelen, now a museum.
